Castration Programme
The previous policy of poisoning stray animals was not only inhumane but also ineffective. Independent research in this field has proven that in situations such as ours in Praia, an intensive program of castration is the only effective solution.
To give you an idea of the extent of the problem, just one un-neutered female could potentially result in 67,000 puppies over a period of 6 years!
To this end, one of the most vital areas of our work is to raise funds enabling Bons Amigos to arrange for Dr. Herwig Zach and his team of European vets to visit Praia on a regular basis to carry out these programmes.
To date, the clinic at Bons Amigos has been responsible for over 2500 castrations; impressive... but this is only a fraction of the total number needed to make the impact we need.
The long-term success of castration programmes can only be achieved if the local communities fully understand the benefits and are prepared to assist with the project. So, alongside this work, it is essential to provide education and information to the local communities of Praia, especially the children.
Bons Amigos work alongside schools and other associations to teach about the importance of animal welfare and how to handle and care for animals compassionately.
