Where is Cape Verde?

The Cape Verde Islands are located in the Mid- Atlantic Ocean 450Km off the west coast of Africa. The archipelago includes 10 islands, the largest one being Santiago, where the Bons Amigos clinic is located. Santiago is a stark yet beautiful island with a rich culture, friendly people, and over 1000 square km of mountain interior.

The work we support, however, is mainly focused in Praia, the islands capital, where water and electricity shortages and regular droughts can make life difficult for the people (and animals) who live there. Yet despite the country's handicaps, the economy has grown quite steadily since independence in the 70s, largely as a result of considerable inflows of official aid and international development.

Although not without problems, Cape Verde is certainly a country worth getting to know, and we would welcome all visitors to contact us if they wish to come and see first hand the work we support.
